Google News

Crafted storytelling for the world’s biggest moments

Over several years, Type/Code partnered with Google to lead exploratory design sprints for what began as Google Currents and evolved into Google News. A key focus of our work was designing interactive experiences for major global sporting events—built specifically for the moment and seamlessly integrated into the Google News mobile app. From the Cricket and Soccer World Cups to the Olympics, we crafted custom modules that allowed millions of users to follow matches, explore standings, and visualize live tournament data—all in real time, right within their news feeds. Each experience was tailored to the event and the storytelling opportunity, blending live data with intuitive design to create rich, engaging touchpoints during high-interest events. Designed to be ephemeral but impactful, these one-off components balanced editorial flexibility with technical rigor—giving Google’s editorial and product teams powerful tools to elevate coverage during key cultural moments.
